International Day of the Girl Child,

Why should we celebrate our girls?

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on October 11, a date set by the United Nations to urge the world community to promote the impacts of gender equality.

But There are numerous reasons that we as Indians celebrate our girls everyday:

Girls are leaders. Girls are change-makers. Girls are driving growth around the world. They are an essential source of transformative change for gender equality, and technology is an important tool to support their work, activism, and leadership.

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated annually on October 11, a date set by the United Nations to urge the world community to promote the impacts of gender equality. As part of the celebration, a theme is selected to highlight the need for the hour.

What is the theme for International Girl Child Day 2021?

This year, the theme has been set as “Digital generation. Our generation”, recognizing the growth in the digital world and how it is widening the gender gap, which needs to be reduced.

Since the pandemic has caused the world to sit in front of laptop/mobile screens to learn and earn money, around 2.2 billion people around the world still do not have an internet connection. This has alienated girls, depriving them of basic education.

Globally, the gender gap for internet users increased from 11% in 2013 to 17% in 2019. For the least developed countries, it is around 43%. In the age of the digital revolution, where people use technology in different ways to learn new skills and earn income, women and girls cannot be left behind.

Therefore, together we all should advocate for equitable access to the internet and digital devices for girls and make targeted investments to facilitate opportunities for girls to access, use, direct, and design technology in safe and meaningful ways.

I’m sure such steps by esteemed organizations like the United Nations can make a big difference.

But so can you.

HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE OUR BIT?

In order to bring in a change, it’s important that we all contribute our bit.

I’m not asking you to go and simply donate for the well being of girls

But if you find any girl child around you, unaware of her basic rights , deprived of easily achievable accesses , Take a moment to encourage and educate her . Small acts of kindness go a long way.

What do you think about this? If you have read till here, do comment and let me know your thoughts

Happy International Girl Child Day Everyone!
