Jay Bhanushali talks about his mother living with diabetes and his role as a caregiver : All about #livingfullywithdiabetes
Good values, ancestral wealth, light eyes and diabetes. Some things that have been passing from generations in our family.
My grandfather had diabetes. I was around 13 when my father too was diagnosed with diabetes and somewhere I believed that at some age I will get it too.
However, I learnt over the years that with healthy lifestyle changes, it’s possible to live well with diabetes.
I met Karan ( now my husband) in 2011 and he casually mentioned that he has diabetes( he later told me how scared he was to mention this to me )
For the gentle man he was that I had already fallen for, I told him that I already know how to be a perfect caregiver !
We married in 2013 and I became a doting caregiver .
Along the way, something that has really been helpful is keeping myself updated with advancements in medical sciences and technology.
I recently attended a very insightful session hosted by Blogchatter where model turned actor Jay Bhanushali discussed all about his role as a caregiver to his mother living with diabetes.
I learnt something new and very helpful .
Here are my learnings for you all:
It is possible to monitor glucose level without getting your self pricked:
Jay mentioned a device called FreeStyle Libre that he has been using for his mother for monitoring glucose levels.
FreeStyle Libre is a new age product that has an advanced and accurate sensor. The technology helps in measuring the glucose levels of a person living with diabetes with the help of a sensor and not by taking a blood sample by pricking the fingers.
To maintain a healthy lifestyle with diabetes, regularly monitoring glucose levels is of utmost importance. Therefore, people living with diabetes don’t have to undergo the painful routine of pricks when they use FreeStyle Libre.
Ease of Use:
Hearing about FreeStyle Libre from Jay was so relieving and liberating but the first thought that came to my mind was will my parents be able to use it without any help?
Jay explained how he thought the same but his 70 year old mother got the hang of using this device in just an hour where he thought it might take her at least a week to understand the technology and the working. She could even place the sensor accurately without any help.
Cheat Day Made Easy :
Jay explained how relishing her favourite sweets has become easier for his mom now. She easily monitors her glucose levels with FreeStyle Libre. If they are under control on a particular day, she binges on her favourite sweet.
My father is very fond of sweets .
I told this to my father first thing after the session and this made him very happy. My Father’s Day gift to him has already been decided . Definitely getting him a FreeStyle Libre.
Managing Glucose Levels on the Go:
Jay also shared how he makes sure that his mother’s diet never goes for a toss when they are travelling. Travelling is the time when one is at higher risk of increased glucose levels and more vulnerable to associated ailments because of erratic sleeping patterns and change in diets. So, it’s very important to keep a check on the levels.
He explained how he prefers choosing airlines that allow him to customize her meals . And how they like going on walks to nearby parks even on holidays.
As a caregiver I found this session extremely helpful and that’s why I thought of penning down my thoughts. Do share it with someone who needs to know this. After all, sharing is caring.
